# How GREC Registration Works — From Assessment to Payment

We handle everything — you get paid.

## The 5-Step Registration Process

1

### Eligibility assessment

We review your system's installation date, location, capacity, and fuel type replaced to confirm GREC eligibility. Most residential and commercial geothermal heat pumps installed after program eligibility dates qualify. This assessment is free with no obligation.

Use our [GREC revenue calculator](/calculator) to get a preliminary estimate before you start.

2

### Documentation collection

We collect your system specs, installation invoice, Manual J load calculation (required in some states), ENERGY STAR certification, and proof of installer credentials. We guide you through exactly what's needed for your state — no guesswork.

3

### State certification and PJM-GATS registration

We submit your system for state certification (Maryland PSC, Virginia SCC, or relevant state authority) and register with PJM-GATS or NEPOOL-GIS. This process typically takes 4–8 weeks depending on the state and current processing queue.

4

### Monthly GREC issuance

After registration is approved, GRECs are issued monthly into your account based on your system's measured or calculated thermal output. The number of credits is determined by system capacity, efficiency rating, and fuel type displaced.

5

### Market sale and payment

Emergent Energy aggregates your GRECs with our full portfolio and executes market sales to utilities meeting their RPS obligations. You receive payment net of our aggregation fee — typically within 30–45 days of sale. No upfront fees, ever.
