A Geothermal Renewable Energy Credit (GREC) is a tradeable certificate issued for every megawatt-hour (MWh) of thermal energy produced by a qualified geothermal heat pump system. Utilities and energy suppliers in states like Maryland, Virginia, and New Hampshire are required by law to purchase a certain percentage of their energy from renewable sources — and GRECs are how they meet that requirement. Homeowners with eligible geothermal systems can register through PJM-GATS or NEPOOL, then sell their credits at current market rates.
